Assisting Hand to Construct Two New Steel-Framed Homes on North Prieur Street
NEW ORLEANS, LA Assisting Hand, in conjunction with the The New Orleans Redevelopment Authority (NORA), is proud to announce the construction of two new steel-framed homes at 1476 and 1480 North Prieur Street. The project is part of Assisting Hand’s Post Katrina Home Ownership and Rebuilding Program.
Assisting Hand, a non-profit 501(c)3 Organization, provides quality and affordable housing to low to moderate income families (specifically in the City of New Orleans & St. Bernard Parish). They have developed strong financial resources to support home restorations and area revitalization programs, and the North Prieur Street homes are among many to be built in the area.
The trustees of Assisting Hand are former businessmen, and have established the organization to “give back” to the community. Through donations and private Investments, Assisting Hand offers renovated and new steel-framed homes to displaced residents, as well as Home Ownership and Planned Urban Development Programs, and a Rebuilding Program for residents having trouble financing and constructing their homes.
To aid them in their efforts, Assisting Hand has entered master team agreements with Second Chance Housing and Green Construction Consultants. Second Chance Housing assists in the building of properties that require repair and upgrades and works with those requiring special financing. Green Construction Consultants provides quality steel-framed home designs and skilled construction personnel to ensure the properties are completed on-time and on-budget.
The two properties on North Prieur Street will be duplexes made from steel-frames. Steel offers many benefits over wood construction, including strength, safety, quality, and cost savings. Steel-frames will not crack, shrink, splinter, creep, split, warp, swell, or rot over time, and are termite- and vermin-proof. Steel resists strong winds, will not burn in a fire, or crumble in an earthquake, and does not have the chemicals found in wood that can decrease indoor air quality. Steel structures move less over time, and can reduce air leakage and energy costs, and cost less to insure than wood-framed homes. In addition, because steel is the most recycled material in the world, an average-sized steel-framed home can save over 50 mature trees and space for numerous cars in a landfill. It is non-toxic and creates 100% recyclable waste. To read more about these properties and inquire online, click here.
“The tragic events of Hurricane Katrina will remain in the hearts and minds of Americans forever, and it is exciting to see progress being made to help restore our communities,” says Bo Chung, Executive Director of Assisting Hand. Chung hails the North Prieur Street project as another great example of a unique partnership to work together for the benefit of the disaster-stricken New Orleans community.
